AGE CONCERN - CAMELFORD

We are an independent charity, affiliated to, but not funded by, Age Concern. Our Charity Registration Number is 274217.

In early 1998, a group of volunteers decided to provide a mini-bus to serve the elderly and disabled elderly community in the Camelford (Cornwall) and district area. It took about six months to raise the £30,000 required to purchase a suitably modified vehicle.

We have been operating this service since the purchase of a mini-bus in August 1998. The service is much appreciated by the community, and is very well used, especially by those elderly residents who live in rural and village locations that are particularly inaccessible, and not serviced by the public transportation system.

Below is a typical monthly bus schedule, which illustrates the usage of our service.

This transport service exists for the poorer, elderly, and elderly disabled members of our community, so we have requested only ‘donations’ from our customers, sufficient enough to cover the actual running costs of the vehicle. However, we have been actively raising funds within the community since we took delivery of our first vehicle in 1998, in preparation for replacement of our current one.

The mini-bus purchased in August 1998 proved such a success, that in 2003 it became necessary to replace the vehicle, which had covered about 235,000 kilometres in 5 years on often quite rough roads and country tracks. Maintenance was becoming a major expense, and was draining our financial resources at an alarming rate.

The replacement vehicle (which has now covered 153,000 kilometres) cost in excess of £36,000. All of this money was raised through local fund-raising events, donations from local businesses, and charitable organisations. Much of the local fund-raising was done by the elderly users of the bus.

As with all charities, we are constantly requiring funds, and any donation, no matter how small is appreciated.
