LOCAL PLACES TO VISIT

Little Cobwebs is within a short drive of Cornwall's most spectacular scenery.

High Cliff, with one of the best views over the ocean in North Cornwall, is about a mile and a half away, and is on the North Cornwall coastal footpath.

St. Juliot church (which is about 2 miles from Little Cobwebs) is famous because of its association with the famous writer and architect, Thomas Hardy.

View, St Juliot church

This beautiful 14th century church was in a dilapidated state when Hardy first saw it in 1870. Hardy had been appointed as the architect responsible for preparation of the restoration work which was needed to save the church from total decay. Sadly much of the church had to be rebuilt, as the level of neglect was so severe. However, the restoration was sympathetically carried out, and the result is impressive.

It was during his visits to the church that he met the Rectors sister, Emma Gifford, who was later to become his wife. In the church is a memorial to Emma which was designed by Thomas Hardy himself.

The church is about half way between Little Cobwebs and Boscastle, the walk from the church to Boscastle being through the woods on the slopes of the Valancy Valley.

Just over 4 miles away is the beautiful fishing village of Boscastle with it's harbour. Boscastle also offers a variety of scenic walks with breathtaking views from the cliff tops.

There are several restaurants and public houses which offer a variety of good food.

Tintagel, which is famous for its legends of King Arthur and its ancient castle, is just a short drive away.

Photographs are of 'St. Materiana's church' and 'The Old Post Office', which are two of the picturesque attractions in Tintagel.

Crackington Haven is only 3 miles away, with The Coombe Barton Inn (see photograph), where you can enjoy excellent food whilst watching the sun set on the ocean.

There are large sandy beaches at Widemouth and Bude which are approximately 10 miles away.

There are also several golf courses in the area, including Bowood Park. The Bowood Park golf course at Lanteglos (a 15 minute drive away), with its 6,700 yard par 72 course, is one of the longest in Cornwall. Greens are built to USGA standards.

The Eden Project

The Internationally known Eden Project is approximately 25 miles away and can be reached in about a 45 minute drive.

The Eden Project (already being called the 8th wonder of the world) opened in late March 2001, and is home to the world's largest greenhouse. Constructed in a giant 50 metre deep crater overlooking St. Austell Bay are the two gigantic geodesic conservatories.

The Humid Tropics Biome is 200 metres long, 100 metres wide and 47 metres high (the worlds largest greenhouse) and is packed with the giants of the plant world - balsa, teak, and mahogany. There is a waterfall and plantations of cocoa, coffee and rubber. The temperature here is about 28ºC with high humidity.

Olives, vines, citrus fruits and hundreds of colourful plants are growing in the smaller Warm Temperate Biome. Plants of the Mediterranean, Californian and South African regions are to be found here.
